Jordan scores 46 and hits last second shot for playoff lead over Detroit

In what seemed too big a task even for Michael Jordan, the Chicago Bulls erased a 13-point deficit in the final six minutes today to shock the Detroit Pistons, 99-97, and take a lead of two games to one in the Eastern Conference championship series.

With three seconds left in a tied game, Jordan soared over the Piston defenders and lofted the decisive bank shot to complete a 46-point effort. He scored 17 points in the final quarter, including 12 in the last four minutes.

It was a comeback that must have astonished even the Bulls, who have been enjoying an unlikely postseason with upsets over the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Knicks.

With 6 minutes 18 seconds remaining, the Pistons built their lead to 13 points, at 90-77. They had momentarily taken the noisy Chicago Stadium crowd out of the game, and threatened to do the same to the Bulls.

The Pistons, with a deep bench and balanced attack, seemed at times intent on wearing down the Bulls. However, in little more than 3 minutes down the stretch, Jordan scored 10 points. With 28 seconds to go, the Bulls' Horace Grant hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 97.

After two timeouts, the Pistons began to put into play what they hoped would be the game-clincher, but Bill Laimbeer was called for an illegal pick on Jordan.

The Bulls called time, and then took another timeout when Scottie Pippen had trouble trying to inbound the ball.

Finally, the pass came to Jordan, who glided along the right side of the lane, then went aloft with a lunging effort that put the ball through the net and the Bulls over the top.

The Pistons got a last chance in the final three seconds, but a long jump shot by Joe Dumars caromed off the backboard and the rim.
