Former NBAer’s Body Returns to Sudan
July 3 — The body of 7'7“ Sudanese basketball star Manute Bol returned to his homeland on Saturday after his death, with hundreds paying tribute to a man revered for his charitable work.
Bol was the tallest player in the history of America's National Basketball Association, along with Romanian Gheorghe Muresan.
He grew up as an uneducated cattle herder in south Sudan, and spent 10 seasons in the NBA. He died last month aged 47 after devoting much of his fortune to humanitarian work in his native land, which was left in ruins by a bloody 22-year civil war with the north.
Bol died at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, where he was being treated for severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition.
The legendary shot-blocker played in the NBA with Washington, Golden State, Philadelphia and Miami. Bol led the league in blocks in 1985-86 with Washington (5.0 average per game) and in 1988-89 with Golden State (4.3).
