Ex-NBAer Derrick Coleman in Detroit Schools Campaign

Aug. 21 -- Detroit Northern prep standout and former NBA star Derrick Coleman will help paint 50 doors blue as part of the Detroit public schools' "I'm In" student retention campaign.

The wooden doors will be painted Saturday morning at a Home Depot on the city's northwest side. The district announced the campaign earlier this month as a way to help stave off declining enrollment. A total of 132 full-size doors eventually will be painted.

School official Robert Bobb says the doors are symbolic of turning each of the district's 172 schools into centers of excellence. Bobb has budgeted for 83,777 students this school year. The district dropped below 100,000 enrollment last fall.
