Basketball Hall of Famer Al Cervi Dies

Nov. 9 -- Basketball Hall of Famer Al “Digger” Cervi, an early star for the Rochester Royals in their pre-NBA days and coach of the 1955 NBA champion Syracuse Nationals, died this morning in a Rochester, NY hospice at the age of 92.

A native of Buffalo, NY, Mr. Cervi was an all-star guard, scoring champion and 1947 league MVP for the Royals of the National Basketball League and later played for and coached the Syracuse Nats. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985.

He was a five-time pro all-star as a player and a many-time coach of the year. He was nicknamed “Digger” because of his hard-nosed defense and drives to the basket.
