Jayson Williams' Manslaughter Case in Judge's Hands

Oct. 8 -- New Jersey state Superior Court Judge Edward M. Coleman will decide whether alleged racial bias and prosecutorial misconduct played a part in a 7-year-old manslaughter case against retired NBA star Jayson Williams.

The judge did not specify on Thursday when he would rule on the case.

Williams was acquitted of aggravated manslaughter in the 2002 shotgun slaying of limo driver Costas Christofi at Williams' New Jersey estate. However, the jury convicted him of attempting to cover up the shooting. He was to be retried on a reckless manslaughter count when it was disclosed in 2007 that a former captain in his office made a racial slur while the office was investigating the death.

Williams' retrial is scheduled for January 2010. He has remained free on bail since the shooting.
