Ex-NBAer Jayson Williams to Wear Alcohol-Detecting Bracelet

Jan. 25 -- Former NBA star Jayson Williams is wearing an alcohol-detecting ankle bracelet, and will continue to do so as he awaits sentencing for killing a limousine driver in his Hunterdon County home and his next court date in New York for a drunken driving charge.

The device is about the size of a deck of cards, worn unobtrusively around an ankle. And it can detect whether the wearer has been drinking. Every 30 minutes, the Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor searches for signs of alcohol consumption. It takes samples of perspiration present on the skin, even if the sweat is otherwise imperceptible

Judges around the country order the devices — nicknamed SCRAM — as a condition of bail, parole or probation when the crime involves alcohol.

A New York judge ordered Williams, 41, to wear one while on bail for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Williams is accused of crashing his SUV into a tree on Jan. 5 in Manhattan.

Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman barred Williams from drinking in order to remain free on bail in the Jersey case. New York officials will have to share the monitor’s results with authorities here, the judge ordered.

The bracelet works with a modem that transmits readings to the company once every 24 hours. A blood-alcohol content of .02 percent or more is a violation.
