Kobe Bryant scores 58 points in triple-overtime loss to Charlotte

Kobe Bryant, who shot 22-of-45, scored 58 points in 55 minutes of action, but the Charlotte Bobcats outlasted the Los Angeles Lakers in triple overtime. Charlotte center Emeka Okafor scored 22 points and pulled down a career-high 25 rebounds. Guard Gerald Wallace, who guarded Bryant down the stretch, scored 28, and forward Matt Carroll added a career-high 27 points. It was Charlotte's first triple-overtime game in its history.

For trivia fans, Carroll's previous first claim to fame was that he scored more points in Pennsylvania high school basketball history than anyone else but Kobe.

Charlotte guard Raymond Felton, who scored 22 points and 15 assists in 57 minutes, said that he believed that it was one of the best games in franchise history. Incidentally, the win ended a three-game team losing streak.

For Los Angeles, no one else scored more than 14 points or took more than 10 shots, not giving Bryant much help. It also frustrated Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who complained that the called offense was not being run, with players instead deferring too much to Bryant.

Kobe missed two jumpers at the end of regulation, including a 20-foot jumpshot at the buzzer, and Felton clanked two shots in the final seconds of the first overtime for the Bobcats. When Wallace fouled out late in the first overtime, picking up two fouls in 15 seconds trying to guard Bryant, he was replaced with little-used reserved Bernard Robinson, who scored four points in the third overtime.

The Lakers' last real chance to win the game eroded when Bryant picked up his sixth personal found with 38.2 seconds left in the third overtime. At the time Charlotte was in the lead, 129-124.
